Each September, communities across the country pause to observe National Suicide Prevention Week—this year, observed from September 7 to 13, 2025. The week is anchored by World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, a day that calls us to listen, connect, and offer hope to those who may be struggling.
Here in Hagerstown and the greater Washington County area, this message couldn’t be more important. Families in our community face unique challenges—economic stress, rural health disparities, and limited access to mental health providers—that can make it harder for people to find timely support. Yet, we also have a strong network of neighbors, schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations working together to change the conversation around mental health.

Why Suicide Prevention Matters in Our Community
Regional resources: Across Frederick, Chambersburg, and Martinsburg, organizations are stepping up to expand crisis response and provide better access to counseling and psychiatric care.
Local impact: In Maryland, suicide is among the leading causes of death for young people and middle-aged adults alike. Washington County has seen higher rates of mental distress than the state average in several community health assessments.
Rural and small-town dynamics: In places like Hagerstown, Smithsburg, Boonsboro, and Williamsport, stigma around seeking mental health care can remain strong. National Suicide Prevention Week gives us a chance to break down those barriers and remind one another that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
This Year’s Theme: #BeThe1To

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline promotes the campaign #BeThe1To, which encourages each of us to:
- Be the one to ask – Check in on a friend, family member, or coworker.
- Be the one to listen – Offer a non-judgmental ear.
- Be the one to keep them safe – Encourage professional support if there are concerns.
- Be the one to help them connect – Share local and national resources.
- Be the one to follow up – A simple text or call can remind someone they’re not alone.
How We’re Participating in Hagerstown
At M.I.N.D. Health and Wellness, we are committed to being part of the solution. During National Suicide Prevention Week 2025, we will:
- Share daily reminders and resources on our social media platforms to spread awareness.
- Highlight the 988 Lifeline and how anyone in crisis—or anyone supporting a loved one—can use it.
- Provide education around warning signs of suicide and how to start supportive conversations.
- Encourage local partnerships across Washington and Frederick Counties to strengthen the community safety net.
Crisis Resources

If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that help is available—locally and nationally:
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – Call, text, or chat 24/7 for free and confidential support.
- Washington County Mental Health Authority – Connects local residents with treatment and crisis resources.
- Frederick County 211 – Access mental health referrals and crisis intervention.
